About Norfolk County

About Norfolk County

Norfolk County includes twenty-eight eastern Massachusetts communities, mostly located to the South and West of the city of Boston. The County government was incorporated in 1793 by an act of the Legislature signed into law by Governor John Hancock, and has its county seat at the town of Dedham. County services include land records, vocational education, Trial Court facilities maintenance, engineering, conservation, recreation, volunteer programs, and additional statutory responsibilities. The Norfolk County Commissioners' Office is charged with implementing policy, budget and other decisions of the elected board of Commissioners. The office's duties include personnel, purchasing, management information systems, and general administration.

Why is this position important? All 28 communities in the County pay an assessment for the services provided by the County. These are tax dollars that leave the municipality and pay for shared services. With an annual budget of close to $31 million a year, it is important to understand how that money is being spent and on what services.
